PRAJA has been working in several States' prisons and in civil society to disseminate the basic concepts and realities that pertain to locking up people as a way of punishing. Some of these concepts are:

• Offenders are sent to prison as punishment not for punishment. The deprivation of liberty that results from being locked up is the punishment
• Offenders may not be punished in the prison nor deprived of those human rights guaranteed in the Constitution and in U.N. documents agreed by all democratic countries
